There is a growing flood of illegal and non-compliant LED bulbs in India. While the government is actively encouraging consumers to shift to energy-efficient LED lighting, the unregulated LED trade is spiraling out of control.
Across the country, small-time assemblers have mushroomed. They import LED components and assemble them in backyards or informal workshops. Shockingly, many retailers have even started manufacturing or assembling LED lights themselves, without any oversight or regulation.
This unregulated practice puts both consumers and the government at great risk. These small assemblers do not follow any quality standards, fail to comply with statutory requirements, and often evade GST, leading to significant losses to the government.
At Utprarit Consumer Foundation (UCF), we provide legal support to consumers who wish to take action against such entities. We have already filed a criminal complaint against non-compliant LED bulb manufacturers in the Karkardooma District Court on 02.11.2017.
As per government regulations, mandatory BIS registration (CRO) is required for LED lighting products. However, most of these illegal products do not comply with the standards laid down by BIS, ISI, or under the Legal Metrology Act. Many of these substandard bulbs fail basic safety checks, pose serious risks such as electric shocks and fire hazards, and offer no customer support or accountability. As a result, consumers are left helpless in case of any defect or injury.
We strongly urge citizens to take an active role in addressing this issue. Avoid purchasing non-standard and unsafe LED products. Report violators when encountered. Always choose certified and legally compliant manufacturers who follow the rules and care about consumer safety.
The fight for safer products and stronger consumer protection must begin at the grassroots level — with informed citizens and strict regulatory enforcement.
